Trump's 'incredible story' remark on the Flydubai attack draws USA TODAY's crowd
Netanyahu's embrace of a passenger and a second Oval Office reaction, both posted the next day, have so far drawn only a few thousand views each.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 422,710 views a day, 46 times a normal first day on this channel (9,134).
Trump calls passenger intervention on Israel-bound Flydubai flight attack 'an incredible story'
Seven hours after it went up, a short clip of President Donald Trump calling the Flydubai flight attack "an incredible story" had passed 170,000 views. A new USA TODAY video usually gathers about 9,000 across its whole first day. This one was running at close to fifty times that pace.
In the clip, Trump says he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the attack aboard the Israel-bound flight. The pilot was stabbed and the plane dropped thousands of feet before passengers stepped in, and Trump praises what they did.
The channel stayed with the story the next day, but neither follow-up has drawn a crowd like this. One shows Netanyahu embracing a passenger he said helped stop the attack. The other is a second reaction from Trump, taken during questions in the Oval Office. A Trump clip about taxpayer-funded TV ads has reached about 10,000 views in the same span, and a report on Pete Hegseth's plan to cut a fifth of generals and admirals has barely started.
In the comments, the conversation has mostly moved away from the president and toward the cockpit. Many viewers write about the pilot and wish him a recovery. Others ask how quickly the passengers and crew reacted, and what the attack means for cockpit security.
A few days ago, as we reported here, it was Trump's Jumbotron moment at the Texas-Tennessee game that took off for USA TODAY. Among the news channels closest to it in size, CBS News, The Wall Street Journal and The Sun are all running well above their usual daily pace. USA TODAY as a whole is a little below its own, which makes this single clip stand out all the more.
