Trevor Wallace's sushi know-it-all orders a California roll
A trip to Japan becomes an excuse to police a date's dinner in Wallace's fast-spreading sketch.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,566,089 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (130,826).
eating sushi with someone who just got back from Japan
Trevor Wallace stops his date mid-dip. Her sushi is apparently meeting the soy sauce incorrectly, and his character has returned from Japan qualified to make that everyone's problem.
In the sketch "eating sushi with someone who just got back from Japan," Wallace plays the traveler who brings home more dining instructions than anyone asked for. He lectures his companion about dipping sushi fish-side down and eating it by hand to respect the chef. She supplies the useful geographical correction: they're in Sacramento.
"I only know Sakemento," Wallace replies.
The Short drew roughly 1.6 million views in its first day, about twelve times his usual start for the format. The comments were also almost six times busier than usual, with viewers repeatedly pointing to the order that arrives after all that culinary instruction: a California roll.
That gap between self-image and reality is familiar territory for Wallace. His much-watched sketches include "Guys with 'Entrepreneur' in their bio" and "the guy who did 1 night in jail," characters whose credentials do considerable work in their own heads. Here, a holiday abroad has become a license to supervise someone else's dinner.
The performance gets still more elaborate when his date asks for chopstick trainers. Anime-style speed lines accompany his internal outrage, before the etiquette expert quietly makes a request of his own: "Can I get a pair too?"
