Toni and Ryan turn "men" and "us" into a spelling trap
The podcast duo's wordplay Short has passed a million views, with commenters admitting they missed the answer too.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,043,452 views a day, 80 times a normal first day on this channel (12,996).
How well does your best friend spell?
Ryan Jon gives Toni Lodge two very ordinary words to spell. The trouble starts when he asks her to put them together.
In "How well does your best friend spell?", Ryan shows Toni "MEN", followed by "US", then gets her to repeat the letters. By the time he asks her to combine them, she is stuck on the separate sounds. What emerges is "Men-us", rather than the familiar word sitting right in front of her: menus.
The spelling trap has drawn about 1.3 million views in its first 30 hours, a much faster start than Toni and Ryan's usual Shorts. For a podcast whose most-watched longer uploads include several try-not-to-laugh challenges, this time the hosts supply the joke themselves.
The comments are full of people describing their own wrong turns. Some say they read the letters on screen and still couldn't recognise the word; others arrived at a sound closer to "me-news". Several compare it with the old trick of spelling "yes", then struggling to read "eyes" without carrying the first pronunciation over.
Toni's moment of recognition comes towards the end of the clip. She finally says "Menus", and both hosts burst into laughter. Ryan hasn't needed an obscure word to catch her out, just a familiar one split in the wrong place.
