Blues, swing and brass: Tim Minchin finds the Cat's sound

Lorne Balfe joins the theme-song featurette, while Minchin's other new upload announces a Sydney premiere for Pickpockets.

How do you make a cat sound both completely bonkers and rather cool? Tim Minchin starts at the piano, with blues and a little swing. Then come the horns.

His most-watched new upload is a promotional behind-the-scenes featurette about the theme song for The Cat in the Hat. Alongside composer Lorne Balfe, Minchin demonstrates the musical ingredients, trying to capture Bill Hader's restless comic energy before the footage moves to the studio brass players. It is a compact glimpse of a song moving from piano rhythm to orchestral colour.

The clip has drawn roughly 8,000 views. In the comments, viewers are picking out the horn section, anticipating Minchin's music in animation and remembering how stressful the Cat's behaviour seemed when they first encountered the story.

There were two uploads this week. The other announces Pickpockets' Sydney premiere on Monday, 9 November, with Minchin hosting a Q&A afterwards. That newer post is currently adding views faster than the Cat featurette, though the latter has the larger total audience so far.

Subscribers held steady at 458,000, a quieter week for growth than nearby singer-songwriter channel SIENNA SPIRO's substantial rise. Among Minchin's older uploads, his Australian Story birthday performance of "Not Perfect" remains the busiest, bringing the week back from animated mischief to the Sydney Opera House concert hall.

What viewers say

  • I saw a trailer for this film and it looked better than it had any right to be. This also sounds absolutely great. I might be forced to purchase the soundtrack.
  • Hopefully there's no hard feelings from the multiple ska bands that had their horn sections all go missing

  • As a well-behaved child I found the Cat in the Hat to be so stressful and awful 😂
