The Young Turks brought former counterterrorism chief Joe Kent on as reports of explosions in Iran were breaking. His central recommendation was to move American troops beyond striking distance, rather than leave them exposed to retaliation while threatening further attacks.
The interview drew roughly half a million views in its first day, more than seven times the channel's usual opening audience for regular videos. But the conversation was not simply an agreement between an anti-escalation guest and his hosts.
Ana Kasparian challenged a line in Kent's co-written opinion piece urging Donald Trump to trust his business instincts rather than hawkish advisers. Kent pointed to Trump's reluctance to enter a war with Iran in 2020. Cenk Uygur pushed back, arguing that responsibility for presidential decisions rests with Trump himself.
Kent's warning went beyond who was influencing whom. He rejected the expectation of a short, neatly contained strike campaign, arguing that assassinations and further escalation remove people who could help negotiate an exit. He also argued that blockades leave American forces vulnerable without delivering the intended pressure.
The discussion later turned to tactical nuclear weapons. Kent warned that their use would open a precedent with consequences far beyond Iran, including other potential nuclear confrontations. This was a discussion of escalation risks, not an announcement of a nuclear strike decision.
A separate Young Turks segment discussing Tucker Carlson's nuclear-escalation warning also drew an unusually large first-day audience. In Kent's interview, however, the most concrete proposal was about troop positioning: "The most pragmatic thing to do is literally just to pull our troops out of striking distance."
American Republican politician and former Army warrant officer and CIA paramilitary officer. He led the National Counterterrorism Center from 2025 to 2026.
