Steak pans and coffee presses share ThatDudeCanCook's counter

Two new uploads pair a cookware comparison with a paid AeroPress partnership.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Cast iron has defenders, and they have arrived in ThatDudeCanCook's comments. Sonny Hurrell's "Sorry Cast Iron Guys, But THIS Is the Best Steak Pan" was the week's biggest new upload, drawing about 71,000 views and turning the discussion into a tour of viewers' own cookware collections.

Some make the case for stainless steel or carbon steel; others aren't giving up their cast iron. The more practical questions concern temperature control, frequent flipping and reverse searing. One viewer has a simpler concern: where was the cut-open steak and the customary bite? The title promises a verdict, but the conversation is just as interested in technique.

Coffee also gets space in the steak video's promotion, followed by an explicitly paid partnership upload, "I Found a Better Way to Make Coffee, Who's Team Aeropress? #aeropresspartner". That newer post had a smaller audience in its opening hours.

The steak theme extends beyond the new comparison. Last month's "Sorry Grill Guys, Pan-Fried Steak Wins" is drawing almost as many daily views as the pan video, giving the channel two active entries in its ongoing case for stovetop steak.

Across the week, ThatDudeCanCook added roughly 1.2 million views while its subscriber count stayed unchanged. Daily viewing is modestly above its usual level. Among similarly sized food channels, Fallow and Japan Eat had much larger viewing weeks; James Hoffmann and Downshiftology had quieter ones. Here, the most active corner of the kitchen remains the steak pan.

What viewers say

  • I missed the part where you cut in and take a bite. Isn't that what cooking videos are all about?

  • Everyone knows you need stainless steel at the high end of medium low
  • What about flipping every 20-30 seconds for more uniform interior?
And, personally, once I found reverse sear, I never changed. Those steaks looked fairly thin but for a 1.5"-2" strip or ribeye, reverse sear can't be beat imho.

  • Cast iron all the way

  • I find that the white enamel cast iron pans are best kept at a lower temperature for browning meat, not high temperature searing.
  • That speaks to how well the Carbon Steel 'transfers' its heat. Not retains.
