Before Gears of War, Slope's Game Room revisits Unreal Warfare
DJ Slope's only new upload explores how a tactical shooter outgrew its original Unreal identity.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Why Gears of War had to completely change its name!
One upload, an origin story. Daniel Ibbertson, better known as DJ Slope, devoted his new video to the name Gears of War nearly carried, and the design changes that helped it become something separate.
In "Why Gears of War had to completely change its name!", he traces the project back to Unreal Warfare, a class-based tactical shooter Epic Games was developing within the Unreal universe. His account describes slower movement, darker monsters and a cover system inspired by Kill Switch: a combination increasingly distant from Unreal's fast-paced arena action. The new name marked that change in identity, not just a different label on the box.
The upload has drawn about 4,200 views and is the channel's busiest video for daily viewing right now. Beneath it, viewers are remembering the Unreal games themselves, including Unreal 2's single-player campaign, and discussing how the engine's name has become more familiar than the series that gave it that name.
Across the channel, weekly viewing reached roughly 79,000 views, with subscribers unchanged. That made for a smaller viewing week than nearby gaming channels Giant Bomb and Xbox Ready, though a busier one than My Life in Gaming.
The catch-up choices have a pleasingly physical counterpoint to all that development history. Slope's Zool collector's-edition unboxing remains active, with a Mega Drive cartridge, art prints and a green soundtrack cassette among the contents. Even nostalgia needs shelf space.

It's sad that Unreal is now known more as the name of the engine, and NOT the games themselves.
