DJ Slope revisits Sony's shout-to-skip advertising patent

His gaming-patent essay also examines a Kinect proposal that would count the people watching a movie on your couch.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 42,849 views a day, 7.4 times a normal first day on this channel (5,820).

  1. 0:10DJ Slope explains how Namco patented minigames played during loading screens.
  2. 2:08Sony's proposals include console-locked game discs and interactive advertisements requiring players to participate.
  3. 6:02A Microsoft proposal uses Kinect to count movie viewers and charge for exceeding a license's permitted audience.
  4. 8:59Activision's matchmaking proposal pairs players with paid-gear users to encourage microtransaction purchases.
  5. 12:18The final section examines Nintendo's patent on Eternal Darkness's sanity effects, which expired in 2021.

Inviting friends over for a movie could have meant paying extra, under a Microsoft patent proposal examined in Slope's Game Room's new essay. DJ Slope describes a Kinect system that would count viewers in the living room and demand a larger group license before letting the movie continue.

That is just one of the proposed interruptions in "5 Secret Patents That ALMOST Destroyed Gaming Forever," which drew roughly 29,000 views in twelve hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience.

The Sony section supplies the strangest image: a patent diagram depicting a player standing up and shouting a fast-food brand's name to advance an advertisement. Elsewhere, the host examines a proposed system for tying game discs to individual consoles. These are patent designs, rather than a tour of features that all reached players' homes.

There is an especially pointed contrast with archival footage of Shuhei Yoshida demonstrating how to share a PS4 game: simply handing it to Adam Boyes. The ease of that exchange sits beside DJ Slope's account of technology designed to prevent it.

The essay moves from restrictions on players to restrictions on developers, including Namco's loading-screen minigames and Nintendo's patent on the fourth-wall-breaking sanity effects in Eternal Darkness. It also examines Activision's proposal to use multiplayer matchmaking to encourage purchases of paid gear.

Meanwhile, viewers are reporting an interruption the patent drawings didn't need to invent. Several say an actual advertisement cut in just as DJ Slope was setting up his example of an intrusive ad. The timing has become a small running joke beneath the video.

What viewers say

  • Ironically, DJ Slopes had just got to the bit where you were "deeply immersed in The Last Of Us when suddenly -" when sudddenly YouTube cut to an advertisement. Couldn't have been better timed. Or worse, if you think about it.
  • Did anyone else read this as Secret Parents That Almost Destroyed Gaming? I was like wow what did mom and dad do
  • I actually got an ad right when you said "And suddenly-" during the part about yelling to skip a McDonald's ad lol.

  • My favorite, "play this game while playing another game" was playing R-Type in between periods in Blades of Steel on the NES.
