Video taking off 14x its usual first day

Gary Neville weighs in on Man City's guilty verdict, and the comments push back

His reaction to the financial rules ruling, which City are appealing, has become the channel's runaway clip, with the replies circling one question: should the club be thrown out?

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 730,457 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (52,629).

Gary Neville was asked for his reaction, and he gave it. Manchester City have been found guilty of all charges over serious breaches of Premier League financial rules, the club has lodged an appeal, and the former Manchester United captain's thoughts are now the most watched thing on Sky Sports Premier League.

Fourteen hours after it went up, the clip had passed half a million views. A new video on the channel usually ends its whole first day near 50,000. A second, differently titled cut of the same Neville segment, posted the same day, has barely stirred. So has the rest of a day built mostly on memories: Michael Owen looking back on his rise to the Ballon d'Or for the PL 100 series, a short on Arsene Wenger's legacy at Arsenal, and two Hull City players, Matt Crooks and Ryan Giles, trying to make each other laugh.

The case behind it goes back to the Premier League's charges of 2023, which covered nine seasons from 2009-10 to 2017-18, the years in which City became the league's dominant side. The tags still call it by its nickname, the 115.

The comment section moved even faster than the views, about five times busier than a usual first day. Much of it is about punishment. Several commenters say Neville argues against expelling the club, and they take him up on it at length. Others object to pundits who still talk as if the verdict were undecided. And a good many replay the title races of the last fifteen years, imagining extra trophies for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool and tipping a hat to Wenger for keeping Arsenal in the top four on far less money. Even a City fan joins in, writing that the trophies now feel different to look back on.
