A former City defender at the table: The Rest Is Football's verdict episode passes a million

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards went through the Premier League's findings on Manchester City, and the episode pulled the whole channel to about nineteen times its usual daily pace.

Why this story? The whole channel is running at 1,282,197 views a day, 19 times a normal day (67,543).

"Reacting To Man City’s 115 Charges Verdict" is the newest full episode of The Rest Is Football, the podcast Gary Lineker hosts with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. It went up on September 30 and had passed a million views within two days, carrying the channel to roughly 1.3 million views in a single day, about nineteen times what it usually draws.

The subject is the Premier League's published findings in the long-running case against the club. According to the episode's description, the findings set out allegations that City used false contracts and hidden funding arrangements with commercial partners to make revenue look bigger and costs smaller. City have consistently denied any wrongdoing, and the description notes that the club had until October 2 to appeal. The three hosts go through what the verdict actually says, what the findings about those commercial deals mean, and what could happen next.

For one of them, the subject is close to home. Richards came through City's academy and was in the squad that won the 2011-12 Premier League title. A short posted the same day, "No one is taking Micah's Premier League medal away," plays on exactly that, and a separate clip of his reaction to the verdict went up beside it.

The verdict itself was what drew the crowd. Two days earlier, a short asking whether the charges could affect players' performances had found only a small audience. Before the findings came out, the trio's big upload of the week was their September Player of the Month debate, titled after a line from the episode: "When you can back it up, you can say what you want."
