Jordan's military says its air force struck militant hideouts in southern Syria in retaliation for an attack at a church funeral in Humud, in the Karak region of Jordan.
United Arab Emirates-based Sky News Arabia interrupts an Israeli election discussion to carry the announcement. Anchor Chantal Saliba reads the military statement before bringing in correspondent Nayef Mashaqbeh by telephone from Amman.
Mashaqbeh identifies the targets as ISIS hideouts and describes the raids as precision strikes. The military says the operation killed and wounded militants and destroyed their vehicles. The report gives no precise casualty count or independently established account of who was hit.
According to Mashaqbeh, Jordanian security forces arrested the church attackers in Al-Judaydah within hours of the attack, before the air raids began. He presents the strikes as part of a rapid military and intelligence response and says the government will not allow threats to the country's communal peace and security. Syria borders Jordan to the north, making the operation a cross-border response.
The broadcast shows security-camera footage of an armed attack outside a building, followed by military aircraft and munitions. An inscription on a munition carries the operation's name, linking Jordanian deterrence with Humud.
About six and a half minutes into the video, the breaking-news coverage ends and the program returns to Israeli politics. Kobi Lavi, a former Arab affairs adviser at Israel's Defense Ministry, argues that figures within Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party hesitate to challenge him openly because they fear retaliation and his political strength. Lavi also recalls Netanyahu's history of springing surprises during election campaigns, while an attempted connection to analyst Yoav Stern is interrupted by technical problems.
A major right-wing political party in Israel, founded in 1973 through an alliance of right-wing groups.
