Gold is trading near $4,000 an ounce after exceeding $5,600 in January, according to United Arab Emirates-based Sky News Arabia, whose brief economic report examines why the metal has fallen and whether the decline will continue.
The presenter of "Business with Lubna" describes gold's worst weekly performance in four months and a loss of more than $1,600 an ounce in less than ten months. The report characterizes the price swings as the most severe since 2008.
Its explanation brings together several pressures: higher oil prices, fears of interest-rate increases, a rising dollar and higher US Treasury yields. Higher yields can make interest-paying investments more attractive relative to gold, which pays no interest.
The report also points to investors selling gold to raise cash after losses in technology stocks. It says India has imposed restrictions on gold purchases to support its currency, adding another constraint on demand.
Despite the sharp decline described in the title, the closing forecasts do not point uniformly downward. The presenter cites bank estimates putting this year's average price between $4,000 and $4,500 an ounce, then highlights a Goldman Sachs forecast of $5,000 in 2027.
Those are forecasts rather than a confirmed recovery. The brief ends with the American investment bank's expectation that gold will regain some of the ground the report says it has lost.
