The Metropolitan Police investigation into Russell Brand extends beyond the case that has resulted in his conviction, according to Sky News. Its report from Southwark Crown Court says police are investigating allegations involving two additional complainants.
That continuing inquiry is a separate development from the jury's verdict. Sky reports that Brand was convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault, refused bail and taken into custody ahead of sentencing on Monday.
The broadcast also describes the moment the verdicts were delivered. According to Sky's reporter outside court, Brand stood motionless in the dock, initially hearing two not guilty verdicts before a guilty verdict on a rape charge.
Newly released Metropolitan Police recordings follow the courtroom coverage. They show interviews dated November 2023, December 2023 and January 2024, with Brand reading prepared statements beside legal representatives whose faces are blurred.
In the December recording, Brand says: "I've never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity." He also tells officers he does not intend to answer questions without sufficient time to consider the information. The January footage shows him reading another statement reiterating his denial. These are recordings from the investigation, preceding the convictions reported at the start of the broadcast.
