Alberto Núñez Feijóo interrupted an interview when he learned of the high-speed train collision near Urda, in Spain's Toledo province. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Transport Minister Óscar Puente suspended their scheduled events, while regional president Emiliano García-Page headed toward the area, according to Spain's public broadcaster, Radio Televisión Española, in its RTVE Noticias report.
This early bulletin captures the first emergency response and the interruption of election campaigning. Later coverage by the broadcaster put the death toll at at least 68, with dozens injured.
Reporter Helena Crespi describes the response from the Madrid headquarters of the conservative People's Party, led by Feijóo. Presenter Silvia Intxaurrondo then speaks by telephone with Jesús Pérez Martín, mayor of nearby Los Yébenes, who is traveling toward the crash site.
The mayor says he has been told the accident is serious but has little further information. He describes an apparent rear-end collision between two high-speed trains in a rural area. The Transport Ministry's preliminary account, cited in the report, says a Renfe AVE may have struck an Iryo train from behind, derailing two Iryo carriages. Both services were traveling from Madrid to Seville, according to railway infrastructure manager Adif.
Pérez Martín says the Civil Guard is coordinating the scene and firefighters are arriving. Civilian volunteers have offered assistance, but authorities have told them their involvement is not needed at that stage. His message is to wait while professional emergency crews deploy.
Intxaurrondo also shows photographs credited to the outlet Artículo 14 and footage from inside and outside the damaged carriages. The collision forced the suspension of high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia; Renfe made ticket changes and cancellations available to affected passengers.
