Russell Brand used fame and status to prey on women - UK Police | #rtenews
Outside New Scotland Yard, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy delivers the Metropolitan Police's response to Russell Brand's conviction: "Russell Brand used his influence, status and fame to prey on and exploit women."
RTÉ News reports that a London jury found the comedian and actor guilty of raping a woman and sexually assaulting three others. Furphy says the verdict demonstrates that fame, wealth and public profile do not place someone above the law.
The clip opens with a contrasting scene: police interview footage dated January 2024, showing Brand reading a prepared statement attacking the documentary and newspaper reporting that had brought allegations against him into public view. That footage records his position during the investigation, rather than a response to the jury's verdict. Brand has denied ever having non-consensual sex, RTÉ reports.
Beyond the convictions, RTÉ says police are continuing to investigate two further rape allegations, which could lead to additional prosecution. A sentencing hearing for the offences of which he has been convicted is due on Monday.
