EU meetings to cause major traffic disruption in Dublin | #RTENews
Dublin commuters face road closures from Tuesday morning, two days before European leaders meet in the capital, according to RTÉ News. The restrictions will extend beyond the docklands, with security motorcades bringing rolling closures across the city.
Superintendent Liam Geraghty says the meetings will involve the largest policing and security operation ever undertaken by An Garda Síochána. Security measures will increase in stages as Ireland hosts the events as part of its EU Presidency.
Restrictions around the Convention Centre Dublin begin at 7am on 10 November and continue until the evening of 13 November. Geraghty identifies North Wall Quay and Samuel Beckett Bridge among the affected routes, alongside a wider cordon across the International Financial Services Centre and northern docklands. He says North Wall Quay will close to east-to-west traffic and pedestrian routes will also be affected.
Further restrictions are planned around the National Gallery of Ireland and Merrion Square on Thursday, 12 November. The leaders' meetings take place on Thursday and Friday, but the disruption will span four days.
For people travelling elsewhere in Dublin, the fixed closures are only part of the picture: Garda motorcycle escorts will temporarily stop traffic as motorcades pass. Geraghty directs commuters to public transport providers' websites and social media for service updates.
