The scale of unauthorized foreign-exchange trading linked to a GMO Internet server breach has not been made public, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama says, leaving a central question unanswered as authorities move to protect customers.
In the full post-cabinet press conference carried by Japan's Nippon Television News, an Asahi Shimbun reporter asks for the transaction volume and financial damage across the affected brokers, as well as information about overseas cases. Katayama consults an aide before explaining that the figures have not been publicly disclosed. She adds that her authorities' regulatory powers extend only to registered domestic brokers.
Katayama says customer information held on rented servers contracted with GMO Internet was accessed without authorization, leading to unauthorized currency trades. She names five firms that have reported customer harm: Golden Way Japan, OANDA Japan, Ava Trade Japan, Gaitame Finest and Dukascopy Japan.
According to the minister, the Financial Services Agency has asked brokers to encourage password changes, have customers check for unfamiliar transactions and strengthen monitoring. Brokers are also taking measures including suspending trading and resetting passwords.
Katayama says GMO Internet has announced that it will compensate losses from the unauthorized transactions. The briefing does not establish a total compensation amount.
The questions then broaden to the government's cybersecurity response. Katayama emphasizes customer protection and refers to G7 discussions about cyber threats involving advanced artificial intelligence. She says the prime minister has directed officials to assemble an emergency countermeasures package by next week, with the Financial Services Agency urgently considering its contribution.
