Winter clothing is finding shelf space alongside everyday convenience-store purchases in South Korea. Discount retailer Daiso and chains including GS25, CU and Emart24 feature in a report tracing how low-price competition is spreading through the country's fashion market.
South Korea's Korean Broadcasting System (KBS News) begins with a change in teenagers' puffer-jacket choices. Expensive coats once described as a second school uniform are giving way to cheaper alternatives, the broadcaster reports, with jackets priced below 100,000 won attracting attention.
Archive student interviews illustrate the pressure to wear what classmates wore. Against that backdrop, the report describes lightweight SPAO puffers selling out and a sharp increase in the brand's children's jacket sales. It presents practicality and value as increasingly important considerations, rather than treating an expensive label as essential.
The bargain hunt extends beyond coats. The compilation shows ultra-cheap household appliances and footage of model and entertainer Joo Woo-jae reviewing inexpensive clothing. Lee Jong-woo, a distribution marketing professor at Namseoul University, argues that other household-goods businesses are following Daiso's low-price approach. The report also shows a substantial rise in textile consumer prices since 2020.
Its next question is more personal: what happens when meeting friends becomes too expensive? A studio discussion examines "friendflation," the term it uses for rising socializing costs, and survey findings about young people cutting back on get-togethers. The presenters connect reduced dining out with pressure on restaurant operators.
The final section contrasts fading interest in expensive omakase meals, where diners leave the menu to the chef, with demand for lower- and mid-priced buffets. KBS reports falling search interest in omakase and restaurant closures, before visiting the more affordable alternative.
Customer Nam Ho-jun explains that unlimited food for 19,000 won informed his choice. Comedian Kim Min-kyung adds that appealing buffets are no longer confined to hotels: variety and a predictable bill are central to the report's closing examples.
