LISTEN: The heartbreaking mayday call of doomed private jet
"I'm here with you, talk to me," an air traffic controller tells the pilot as she reports a rapid, uncontrolled descent over Florida.
The exchange is part of a news.com.au video combining emergency radio audio, dashcam footage and scenes from the aftermath of the Palm Beach County crash. It opens with a viewer-discretion warning and contains distressing footage and communications.
The pilot initially requests an altitude change, then declares a mayday. She reports an overspeed condition and a steep bank as the controller remains in contact. The recording documents the emergency, but does not establish what caused it.
According to the report, the aircraft was believed to be a Learjet 60 travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. Citing AFP, news.com.au says all nine people aboard died when it crashed into a South Florida mobile home park.
The upload has reached about 2.6 million views, far beyond the channel's usual audience for a Short. Its closing footage shows fire rescue crews and utility vehicles at the cordoned-off scene before replaying the dashcam recording.
