Adelaide's AI parking car meets a driver's dashcam, and the $342 fine goes

One still photograph said bike-lane offense; a few seconds of video showed a man reversing into a parking space.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 111,725 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (5,050).

He was reverse parking. The council's camera car saw something else.

In news.com.au's Short, an Adelaide driver's dashcam on East Terrace shows him indicating and stopping for a moment so he can back into a space, just as a City of Adelaide Park Safe vehicle rolls past. A $342 fine for stopping in a bicycle lane followed. The notice carried a single photo of his car, with no video.

The Park Safe cars combine cameras, number plate recognition, GPS and artificial intelligence to spot parking offenses. The narrator says one of these vehicles alone issued $4.25 million in fines in 2024-25. The driver took his footage to Reddit under the heading "Adelaide City Council Robo-Revenue-Raising-AI-Car fail." After news.com.au asked about it, the council reviewed the notice and withdrew the fine. Its statement defends the review process and its monitoring of bike lanes.

The story has drawn far more viewers than this news channel's Shorts usually do, and the comment section filled up even faster, at roughly sixteen times the pace of a usual first day. Most of the talk is about that single photograph. Many viewers argue that the cars should record a few seconds of video whenever they flag a car. Others point out that this driver could prove his case only because he happened to have a dashcam running.

What viewers say

  • Photos alone are no longer enough. Councils need video evidence from now on.

  • So if the car system can take pictures, why can it not also take a few seconds of video footage as well when it notices a "discrepancy"? A picture does not always tell a thousand words. Even simple dash cams have the ability to record the last minute of playback.

  • So guilty until the driver wastes time and effort to prove himself innocent. (If he is fortunate to have evidence)

  • If someone isn't at fault the council should pay compensation for time wasting and stress.
  • Fines demonstrably issued in error should be compensated to the same amount.
