Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Aussie man freaks out over eight legged hitchhiker while driving

news.com.au has passed 1.5 billion total views, and its busiest new upload offers a rather smaller subject: a spider on the ceiling of a car.

In "Aussie man freaks out over eight legged hitchhiker while driving", the driver notices his passenger filming, realizes what has attracted the camera's attention and urgently asks where the spider is. A red circle eventually locates it above the passenger seat. He stops the car before scrambling across to leave through the passenger-side door and tumbling onto the roadside grass. The footage is credited to TikTok user @nickg1254.

The comments turn the encounter into a discussion of who really owns the vehicle, with one viewer joking that the spider has merely lent the man her car. Others recall their own unwanted passengers and encounters with sun visors.

That clip sits within a varied slate of fifteen uploads. The exclusive Ben Roberts-Smith interview has the strongest current viewing momentum among the channel's videos, although the spider clip has accumulated more views so far. Footage of a boat capsizing at Brunswick Heads is also drawing attention; all three people aboard were safely brought ashore.

Across the channel, daily views are running at nearly three times the usual level, and the week brought about 10,000 new subscribers. Among nearby news channels, LBC had a particularly large week for views, while TalkTV is also experiencing a sharp daily lift. For news.com.au, the immediate viewing interest spans a substantial interview, a coastal rescue and one very unwelcome hitchhiker.
