Limoges' burning city hall bookends a France unrest report
The news.com.au Short moves from Paris to Lyon, setting a student's cost-of-living complaints beside Macron's call for calm.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 126,406 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (5,311).
Landmarks fall after student protests rage across France
The tower came down. news.com.au opens its report on France's unrest with Limoges City Hall engulfed in flames, then returns at the very end as the burning tower falls.
Between those two shots, the Short travels from city to city. In Grenoble, demonstrators harass passengers on a miniature tourist train. In Paris, there is a looted Franprix, an overturned car on fire and fireworks aimed at police. Later, police vehicles roll on shredded tires, their bare rims throwing sparks. Marseille brings tear gas and thrown projectiles, while a large building burns in Lyon after dark.
A young protester in Paris explains why students are marching. "We fight because living conditions are too harsh, because the cost of gas is too high," she says, adding that students want more teachers and decent conditions to learn in. Emmanuel Macron appears at a podium in Brussels. "Obviously, I have only one message to convey: a call for calm," he says, affirming the constitutional right to demonstrate before adding that "this right also entails a duty of respect."
The description cites the CGT union's estimate of about half a million people at 1,750 rallies on Saturday. It also includes Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's warning that no one will impose a political agenda through violence.
The Short drew about 126,000 views in its first day. Its comment section moved faster still, with hundreds of comments against the handful a usual Short receives. Much of that discussion turns on the title's wording, as commenters ask whether "student protests" describes what the footage shows.
