Burke points to rising threats against office holders after Helen Haines attack
news.com.au's report pairs Anthony Albanese's view that the Wangaratta attack was deliberate with messages from across Parliament.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 132,035 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (5,396).
Australian MP Helen Haines critically injured in 'targeted' attack
Someone is in custody. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stresses that point early in news.com.au's report on the attack on Helen Haines, then turns to a wider concern: reports of harassing and threatening behavior against people in high office are rising. "In the more recent financial year, that 951 has gone to 1,067," he says.
The independent federal MP for Indi was struck by a white Toyota LandCruiser outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, in northern Victoria, on Monday afternoon. She suffered severe injuries to her lower body. Police and ASIO are investigating, and the report says a man was detained through a citizen's arrest.
Anthony Albanese is careful but direct. "Well, this wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear," he says, adding that counter-terrorism teams are involved. The report does not give a motive. Albanese also describes a hardening political climate: "The temperature has undoubtedly been increased, not just here in Australia, of course."
The Short closes with messages from politicians, including Pauline Hanson and Angus Taylor, before Victorian Acting Premier Ben Carroll acknowledges what the attack means for the Wangaratta community.
It drew about 130,000 views in its first day, far more than the channel's Shorts usually draw. A Short posted the following day also made an unusually fast start: Brisbane runner Kaley Koppa, a year after her cardiac arrest beside the Brisbane River, meeting the bystanders and the Star Casino security worker whose CPR and defibrillator restarted her heart.
