Carney rejects U.S. interference allegation, keeps trade talks open
The Globe and Mail's Istanbul clip pairs a firm denial with a willingness to wait for a trade agreement Canada considers worthwhile.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 100,914 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (9,138).
Canada is not interfering in U.S. midterms: Carney
Canada can wait for a trade deal, Prime Minister Mark Carney says, even if that means negotiating with a different U.S. administration. But he is rejecting Washington's allegation that Ottawa is trying to influence American elections.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Friday, Carney said: "There is no merit to these claims." He added: "We have no intention to interfere with their democratic processes."
The remarks followed a statement circulated by the U.S. embassy in Canada accusing the Canadian government of trying to sway American politics. The embassy pointed to ministers' and premiers' public appearances and official documents as the basis for its allegation. Carney also expressed disappointment with U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra's role in raising it.
The Globe and Mail's brief clip has drawn roughly 73,000 views in about half a day, already well beyond the channel's usual full first-day audience for a Short.
The video moves from Carney's denial to his position on trade: Canada remains engaged with the U.S. government and ready to negotiate in good faith. Speed, he makes clear, is not the deciding factor. He is willing to reach an agreement promptly, wait months or work with another administration.
