Rep. Jamie Raskin says Haley Stevens told him she’ll vote for Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan
Jamie Raskin says he spoke to both Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed the previous night, and came away with a message of Democratic unity. Stevens, he tells Meet the Press, asked him to convey that she would vote the Democratic ticket.
That account sits alongside a very different public act: Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday, after losing Michigan's Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed. NBC News posted separate clips of her explaining the switch and El-Sayed responding to it. A public endorsement and a private ballot are different things, but the contrast gives Raskin's assurance particular relevance.
In the interview, Raskin dismisses the internal dispute as Washington-focused political gossip. He predicts a Democratic landslide in Michigan, citing candidates Callie Barr and Sean McCann, and argues that opposition to Donald Trump has united his party. "Haley gets it, Abdul gets it," he says.
The Short has drawn about 107,000 views in twelve hours, already far beyond NBC News's usual first-day audience for that format. Its comments are also much busier than usual, with viewers questioning how Raskin's account fits Stevens' endorsement.
NBC's accompanying coverage supplies the candidates' public responses: Stevens explains her support for Rogers, while El-Sayed says he is not focused on her endorsement.
