NBC reports trillion-dollar tech sell-off amid AI spending doubts
Brian Cheung's report links falling chip stocks to questions about AI investment, then turns to the separate breach at Binance.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,621,808 views a day, 164 times a normal first day on this channel (9,907).
Market drop wipes out more than a trillion dollars in value
Intel's shares fell by more than a quarter, and its finance chief offered little reassurance about cash flow. In NBC News' report, Brian Cheung puts that drop inside a broader Wall Street sell-off driven by earnings and worries over whether enormous spending on AI will pay off.
The report says more than a trillion dollars in tech-stock value was erased, with Nvidia among the other chipmakers falling. Intel CFO David Zinsner says he does not expect the year to bring positive cash flow, giving the wider investment debate a concrete company-level concern.
The short report drew an estimated 1.6 million views in its first day, far beyond the channel's usual start for Shorts. The same segment also appears in the October 30 edition of NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas, which had an unusually strong first day of its own.
Cheung then turns to a different kind of financial loss: the multibillion-dollar hack at cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Falling stock-market value reflects lower share prices; the exchange breach concerns stolen assets. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng says customer assets are safe and promises that the company will cover the hacked losses from its own funds.
