Old school logging
Where does Janis Putelis go when it is whitetail season? Back to his own ground in Wisconsin. In "Back In The Saddle | Wisconsin Whitetail," the MeatEater regular has spent the summer working the property for habitat and hunting, and now hangs in his tree saddle waiting on a buck the description calls "Mr Big Nuts." It drew about 111,000 views in its first 24 hours and is easily the busiest of the channel's four new uploads.
Janis is having quite a run. His other recent hunt, "Mountain Muley Honey Hole," part of the 12 in '26 series, is nine days old and past half a million views. In it he hikes miles and thousands of vertical feet to get away from the crowds, and the chapters follow him from glassing and bushwhacking through the stalk to a long wait for the shot. A short teaser for that hunt went up this week too, though most people seem to be heading straight for the full episode.
Steven Rinella, who founded MeatEater, gets a quieter spotlight. In "Old school logging" he finds old springboard notches near his Alaska fish shack. Loggers once cut slots like these into a trunk, slid boards into them and stood up there to fell the tree above its wide base. The short is near 180,000 views. Das Boat, the channel's fishing series built around one old boat on new water, put up a trailer as well.
Among the outdoors channels close to MeatEater in size, Field Days is the one having a big stretch, running at more than twice its usual daily views, and Xander Budnick is also busier than normal.
