A worker portions yellow peach flesh into plastic containers without gloves. The footage, identified as coming from a food-processing factory in China's Anhui province, opens a compilation examining hygiene concerns in food production and hotel cleaning.
South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) brings together reports originally broadcast in May, August and October, rather than presenting the incidents as a single new outbreak. The compilation has drawn about 323,000 views since yesterday.
The peach-packing segment, dated October 27, is followed by a May report from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. Undercover footage shows a hotel employee wiping a toilet with a guest towel, then using that same towel on a toothbrushing cup and washbasin. MBC reports that Chengdu authorities responded to the controversy with a comprehensive investigation and special inspections of the hotels concerned.
The final segment, originally broadcast in August, concerns cabbage grown around Zhangjiakou in Hebei province. MBC reports that workers dipped cabbage roots in formaldehyde solution to preserve their appearance during long-distance transport. The broadcaster identifies formaldehyde as a carcinogen.
An environmental blogger questions a worker about how long the treatment keeps the vegetables fresh; the worker answers that it lasts two or three days. MBC says the blogger subsequently stopped a truck and carried out testing that found formaldehyde concentrations more than ten times the permitted limit.
The report says Chinese authorities ordered a special investigation and increased cabbage testing at wholesale markets. Its closing distinction is important for South Korean consumers: Beijing correspondent Lee Pil-hee says it had not been established whether the treated cabbage was exported to South Korea, while Chinese authorities were tracing its distribution.
