Firefighters have extinguished the blaze in Seoul's Guryong village after a 13-hour operation, with strong winds and insufficient water complicating their work, South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) reports.
The October 28 morning newscast opens with the aftermath in Gaepo-dong, in the capital's Gangnam district. It reports that 107 residents moved into shelters. A later follow-up puts the number displaced at 127 and says a joint examination of the site is scheduled for the day.
Guryong is a shantytown within Gangnam, close to some of Seoul's affluent neighborhoods. Resident Jung Jae-sik describes repeated fires over his decades there and expresses little sense that moving to a shelter changes his situation. The displacement coincides with unusually cold weather: the broadcast's next report goes to central Seoul, where commuters are wrapped in thick coats as temperatures approach freezing. A subsequent weather update says cold-wave alerts have been lifted, although conditions remain chilly.
The bulletin also covers the Democratic Party's decision to pursue a parliamentary inquiry into Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, described as the first such inquiry into a chief justice in South Korea's constitutional history. In a separate election investigation, it reports that a special counsel is inspecting and recounting roughly 2.5 million local-election ballots stored at Seoul's Olympic Park.
Energy policy receives a brief but consequential update: continued operation of units three and four at the Kori nuclear power plant has been approved, extending their operating lives by a decade, according to the report. Overseas coverage examines Israel's election exit polls and Donald Trump's conditional statement that he would accept an election outcome if it was fair.
Later reports turn to the distance between economic growth and household finances. Despite a rebound in third-quarter growth, interviewees describe bank balances running down early, including a performer preparing a production with her own savings.
The consumer segment reports that the Korea Consumer Agency identified 420 improper online advertisements using AI, including fabricated testimonials and people posing as experts. An agency representative urges caution over advertisements promising rapid physical changes.
The broadcast also reports racist conduct directed at LAFC player Son Heung-min, and closes its cultural coverage with RM's collection on exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The museum report examines the attention generated by the BTS member's involvement.
