Heavy smoke from a fire in Seoul's Guryong village prompted evacuation alerts and traffic diversions as firefighters escalated their response on October 27, South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) reported.
In the breaking-news bulletin, anchor Lee Sung-il connects with reporter Kim Jung-woo, who says the blaze began around 3:50 p.m. in Section 2 of the settlement in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam district. Fire authorities raised their response to level two around 4:30 p.m. No injuries had been identified at the time of that report.
Gangnam authorities sent residents text messages advising evacuation and asking drivers to take alternative routes. Police restricted access beside the Daemo underpass. Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min directed the relevant agencies to mobilize all available personnel and equipment, the reporter said.
The settlement's makeshift housing sits within Gangnam, a district associated with expensive apartments, luxury stores and skyscrapers.
A subsequent report said firefighters extinguished the blaze after 13 hours, with strong winds and a shortage of water hampering their efforts. It reported that 127 residents had been displaced and that a joint inspection was planned for October 28. The initial bulletin did not establish a cause.
