A muffler you can blow straight through, inside Matthias Wandel's dust collector
His one new video opens up a Makera cyclone dust collector lite to look at the pipe that absorbs the sound and lets the air pass.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
This pipe takes out the sound while letting air through
On a usual day, Matthias Wandel's channel draws something like twenty thousand views. Right now it is running at more than three times that, and nearly all of the lift comes from a single short-titled curiosity: "This pipe takes out the sound while letting air through."
It is a very Wandel kind of video. The description says he was looking inside his Makera cyclone dust collector lite and found the part that keeps it quiet: a muffler the air is blown straight through, while the sound gets soaked up along the way. It is no build and no jig, just an engineer stopping to work out why a part does what it does. That fits the four-word promise of his about text, "An Engineer's approach to woodworking." It passed 138,000 views in its first day and is past 180,000 now.
Behind it, the workshop's earlier output keeps ticking along at a gentler pace. A shelf for the basement, with dowels angled so they also brace the corners against racking, is two weeks old and nearly at 195,000 views. The dowels came from his own dowel makers, the subject of a spring video whose title gives his verdict on everyone else's.
Among the DIY channels nearest him in size, Eoin Reardon and RUDAN BROTHERS are the ones having the big stretch, while John Malecki is running a little under his usual pace. For a channel that usually moves at a steadier clip, a jump like this one stands out, and it came from a pipe.
