The jokes came first. Before Cristiano Ronaldo had said a word, iShowSpeed's chat was already filling with donations teasing him about his idol's goodbye, and he was having none of it. "Ronaldo just retired, y'all making jokes, bro?" he snaps.
Then he pulls up the farewell itself. "Cristiano Ronaldo Retired..", posted on Live Speedy, the channel that carries Speed's stream moments, has drawn about a million views since yesterday. The title is blunter than the news: Ronaldo is leaving the Portugal national team after 23 years and handing on the number 7 shirt, not hanging up his boots.
Speed watches the Portuguese speech roll over old tournament wins and crowds in red. "This shit not even fake, this is real life," he says, as if he needed convincing. When the speech ends, he sits holding his head and says nothing at all, which for Speed is the loudest reaction he has.
What follows is pure stream luck. A Naruto scene and its music come on just as he starts to talk again, and it is the moment the comments keep returning to, many joking that it must have been scripted. Others write about growing up with Ronaldo and feeling a piece of their childhood leave with him. The comment section was nearly three times as busy as Live Speedy's usual first day.
Speed's tribute is about the work rather than the trophies. "I want to become a man just like you, bro," he says, before asking chat to flood the screen with Portugal flags and Ronaldo's celebration cry.
He also does the arithmetic out loud: Ronaldo is done with national football, he insists, but "he still gonna reach to 1,000 goals." Then he opens Instagram and leaves his own thank-you under the post captioned "OBRIGADO, PORTUGAL."
