Piers Linney sees AI at its "1999 internet" stage
The entrepreneur predicts robots will outnumber cars, but LBC's Matt Frei finds the prospect more frightening than persuasive.
Why this story? One of the most watched videos since yesterday, with 43,995 views.
Artificial Intelligence is at its '1999 internet' stage
More robots than cars in the places we live and work: that is Piers Linney's prediction for the next decade or so. Matt Frei isn't reassured. "You're still not selling it to me! I mean it's a scary, it's a scary future."
Their LBC exchange has drawn roughly 44,000 views in its first 22 hours. Linney, the former Dragons' Den investor and co-founder of Implement AI, reaches for the shift from horse-drawn transport to cars to illustrate how quickly familiar streets can change.
His larger argument is that AI resembles the internet around 1999: already here, but with much of its economic impact still ahead. He expects changes more fundamental than those brought by the internet and argues that resisting them is no longer a realistic option.
The clip ends with ownership rather than robot numbers. Pointing to China's development of AI and its use of distillation techniques on US models, Linney argues that countries need a stake in the technology's supply chain, not simply a future as its customers.
