EricTheCarGuy's timing-chain job becomes a CRV engine replacement

The Used Car Experiment takes an unexpected detour, while a shorter sponsored workshop fix draws the week's largest audience.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Eric set out to replace a VTC actuator and timing chain. He ended up replacing the engine instead, giving "This Is Not The Video I Intended To Make" a thoroughly literal title.

The Honda CRV repair stretches well beyond an hour, with Eric's chapter list taking viewers through axles, exhaust, subframe bolts and engine transfer before reaching the first startup. He says the timing-chain tutorial will come later. For now, the Used Car Experiment has supplied a much bigger job than planned.

That October 30 upload has reached roughly 39,000 views and is currently adding views faster than anything else on EricTheCarGuy. But the week's most-watched release is the much smaller job in "Problem Solved!", which has drawn about 119,000 views. It is a sponsored demonstration for Milton Industries: Eric removes an old air-hose fitting, seals the threads and installs a replacement coupler. Viewers are exchanging memories of stubborn fittings, preferences for push-to-connect designs and accounts of equipment that has lasted decades.

Two uploads, then, at opposite ends of the workshop workload. The older "What Scan Tool Should You Buy?" also remains among the channel's active draws, extending the practical tool theme beyond the air lines.

Subscribers held steady, while the channel added roughly its usual week's worth of views. Among nearby motoring channels, WD Detailing had a particularly busy week; EricTheCarGuy's audience was smaller, with the unexpected CRV engine replacement now its strongest daily draw.

  • I keep a Milton card in my tool box for 43 years now to order more as the air tool count increases. Easy on-Easy off. Type A

  • I never had a problem from harbor freight couplers. I do like the female couplers that are push on that you don't have to unlock when putting a tool on.
