People sit and lie on grass beside the tracks while others move among damaged train carriages. A passenger's recording takes the view outside the wrecked trains and down the embankment after Wednesday's high-speed rail collision near Urda, in central Spain's Toledo province.
Published by Spain's EL PAÍS newspaper, the footage opens with Civil Guard officers and passengers beside a damaged carriage. The person filming then walks along the slope, revealing derailed cars and debris. A wider view shows passengers scattered across the field; toward the end, several people inspect and climb among the severely damaged remains of a carriage.
The accompanying report, citing emergency services, says an AVE train struck an Iryo train that was stationary on the track, sending carriages from both trains down an embankment. Its initial account cited the government as reporting at least 30 deaths and warning that the toll could rise. Government sources attributed the collision to human error, according to the newspaper; the passenger footage itself does not establish the cause.
Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended. The report also says assistance centers for relatives opened at Madrid's Atocha station and in Seville.
