"Uno de los raíles ha salido por el techo y se ha llevado a dos personas por delante" | PODCAST
Antonio Gómez initially thought the object inside his train carriage was a pillar. Then he realized it was a rail, which he says had entered through the floor and pierced the roof, striking two people seated to his left.
Spain's newspaper EL PAÍS carries his account in a short excerpt from its Hoy en EL PAÍS podcast about the railway disaster near Urda, in Toledo province in central Spain. His voice accompanies footage of passengers, firefighters and emergency personnel at the scene.
The reporter describes Gómez sitting on a plastic chair in Urda's sports center, injured and with blood on his shoes. He is waiting for news of a missing traveling companion and says he will not leave until that person is located.
The excerpt records his experience of the impact, rather than establishing what caused the crash. It also describes the response around him: volunteers arriving with supplies and emergency services gathering at the sports center, while Gómez continues to wait.
A municipality in Toledo province, in Spain’s Castile-La Mancha region.
