BOLSONARO anuncia que liderará la oposición a LULA | EL PAÍS
Flávio Bolsonaro is pointing his supporters toward parliamentary opposition rather than a campaign to overturn Brazil's presidential election.
Spain's newspaper EL PAÍS reports that the defeated candidate abandoned his demand to annul the result less than a day after making it. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth presidential term in Sunday's runoff, according to the report.
In a recorded statement, Bolsonaro says he will organize the opposition and asserts that his political camp secured majorities in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. He promises not to be silenced or intimidated and urges supporters to keep their heads high.
Bolsonaro, a senator for Rio de Janeiro and the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, made the change after consulting his father, the newspaper reports. It also notes the timing: his retreat came shortly after US President Donald Trump backed his allegations of electoral fraud. That backing did not establish those allegations as fact.
The brief video intercuts his statement with footage of him voting, greeting supporters from a vehicle in the rain and appearing before microphones. His message is no longer a demand for another electoral outcome, but a pledge to use congressional strength against Lula's government.
