Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa's salsa was not quite a day old when it passed 136,000 views. That is roughly thirteen times what a new upload on the Dancing with the Stars channel usually draws in its first day.
The song was "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)," the cool, drum-machine-driven Daryl Hall & John Oates hit from 1981. It is an unusual choice for a salsa, because the track is famous for holding back rather than exploding. Hall & Oates came up more than once on Yacht Rock night. Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik took "Maneater" for a quickstep.
The comments under the clip keep returning to one word: improvement. Viewer after viewer measures this dance against the one from a week earlier and calls it a comeback. They point out that she is loosening up and growing more confident. Several give Sosa credit for the choreography. One self-appointed judge scores it a seven and wishes for a little more hip action. Another is still amazed that the couples learn a routine like this in under a week.
One viewer brings up Save the Last Dance, the 2001 film in which Stiles played a ballet dancer learning hip-hop. For many people it is the movie they think of first when Stiles and dancing come up together.
Among the routines from the same night, Jenna Dewan's samba to Toto's "Africa" has more views. Tyler Cameron's jive, Taylor Hanson's foxtrot, Connor Wood's foxtrot and Ali's quickstep each have about half as many. Stiles, who arrived better known for Shakespeare updates and spy thrillers than for ballroom, now has one of the most-watched dances of the week.
