New species of tyrannosaur identified by Alberta researchers
A tyrannosaur skull unearthed in Alberta in 2010 has acquired a different identity. University of Alberta researchers have identified it as a new species, according to CTV News, after years of comparing its features with fossils in other collections.
Nicole Weisberg's report begins with researchers carefully unpacking fossilized skull bones. The specimen came from the Oldman Formation in Dinosaur Provincial Park and was initially assumed to be Daspletosaurus.
Researcher Mark Powers began a closer comparison five years ago. He noticed characteristics that placed the specimen between two familiar tyrannosaur genera, Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus, without fitting either.
"This is probably not either Daspletosaurus or Gorgosaurus, and might in fact be a new taxon," Powers recalls.
The clues are small but distinctive: horns above the eyes and an arrow-shaped opening in the side of the skull. The investigation took the researchers to museum collections across North America to check those differences against other specimens.
CTV identifies the newly named species as Tromerosaurus saulomons. Powers connects the name's "lonely mountain" reference to the skull's horns, giving an anatomical detail a lasting place in the animal's scientific identity.
