Alberta moves to permanent daylight time
Albertans will leave their clocks alone this Sunday, according to CTV News, as the province begins keeping daylight time year-round. The government calls the arrangement "Alberta Time."
Ending the twice-yearly switch does not settle the question of which time to keep. CTV reports that under permanent daylight time, Calgary's sunrise will come around 9:40 a.m. in late December, leaving school journeys and morning commutes in darkness. The report cautions drivers to watch for children traveling to school.
McDonald, a University of Lethbridge neuroscientist interviewed by video call, explains the concern in terms of two competing schedules: the social clock set by work and school, and the body's biological clock. Morning obligations can arrive before the body is ready for them.
According to the report, that misalignment may contribute to winter fatigue, stress and difficulty concentrating. CTV closes with a distinction central to the decision: many sleep researchers support ending clock changes, but favor permanent standard time rather than the daylight time Alberta has chosen.
