Two TikTok creators' arson charge runs sixty-five times past Criminally Obsessed's usual start
The same day, the channel's coverage of Christa Pike's failed execution, including an interview and her attorneys' press conference, also drew far beyond its norm.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 472,428 views a day, 65 times a normal first day on this channel (7,292).
TikTok Odd Couple Charged With Arson?
An arson short traveled far. "TikTok Odd Couple Charged With Arson?" passed 870,000 views in about 29 hours, roughly sixty-five times what a new video on Criminally Obsessed usually draws on its first day. Its comment section filled far faster than the channel's Shorts usually do.
The case comes from West Virginia. According to the video's description, two young TikTok creators each face charges of first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit arson. The criminal complaint, as the description summarizes it, says surveillance video shows a lit piece of paper being placed inside an abandoned home, and the two later partially entering the building as the fire grew. Both were arrested and arraigned on Tuesday. The fire also damaged a neighboring church. The title keeps its question mark, and the case is at the charging stage.
Much of the discussion centers on the arraignment footage itself. Several viewers point out that the pair built their following on camera, and that a camera is now at the center of the case against them.
The short shared the day with a very different story. The channel has stayed on Christa Pike, whom Tennessee tried to execute on September 30 for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Two lethal injection doses failed, and her attorneys say she is in critical condition. Investigative reporter Anne Emerson's interview with Abe Bonowitz of Death Penalty Action, who was protesting in Nashville that day, drew more than twenty times a usual first day. The live press conference held by Pike's attorneys drew about ten times.
The channel has its own link to the case. In May, it interviewed Pike by phone for its documentary "Dead Woman Walking: Pike Vs Tennessee." In that call, she described a failed lethal injection as the outcome she feared most.
