Flávio Bolsonaro entered the United States using a Brazilian diplomatic passport a day after Brazil's Federal Police canceled it, according to Brazil's CNN Brasil. The senator arrived in Miami on Wednesday after traveling through Argentina following his presidential election defeat.
The report adds a specific passport sequence to the questions surrounding his departure: public security analyst Elijonas Maia says Bolsonaro left Brazil using his Italian passport, while the broadcaster reports that he presented his Brazilian diplomatic passport on entering the United States.
Bolsonaro, a Liberal Party senator representing Rio de Janeiro and a son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, holds ordinary Brazilian, diplomatic Brazilian and Italian passports. Presenter Tainá Falcão sets out that distinction before asking how the diplomatic document could have been used after its cancellation.
Maia, crediting reporting by Léo Lopes, examines the formal communication process involving the Federal Police, Brazil's Foreign Ministry, known as Itamaraty, and international authorities. He identifies the Foreign Ministry as responsible for notifying authorities abroad. The segment does not establish when US officials received notice or why they accepted the document.
Footage shows an aircraft on the tarmac in Miami and passengers and personnel disembarking. Maia says Brazil's Justice Ministry is expected to contact US authorities after receiving a Federal Police report on Bolsonaro's departure.
The broadcast also refers to an existing investigation into suspected money laundering involving the senator. In the closing recap, presenter Gustavo Uribe distinguishes his wife's position: Fernanda entered with an ordinary passport and, he says, faced no judicial restriction.
