In the morning, allies were dismissing the possibility that Flávio Bolsonaro would leave Brazil. By the time of this broadcast, they were telling reporters he had traveled to the United States with his family.
That change in their account is the focus of Brazil's CNN Brasil news channel in this edition of Bastidores CNN. Presenter Tainá Falcão reports that allies confirmed the senator's departure with his wife and daughters following his presidential election defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Political reporter Larissa Rodrigues describes how center-right allies had advised Bolsonaro to recognize the election result and rule out leaving the country. Some had initially treated the possibility of his departure as implausible. Rodrigues says she had been trying unsuccessfully to contact him directly, distinguishing the allies' account from a statement by Bolsonaro himself.
The report contrasts that advice with an earlier public position taken by his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, in the United States: Eduardo had said he supported Flávio leaving Brazil if he lost the election.
Flávio, a Liberal Party senator representing Rio de Janeiro and a son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, was also under an order to surrender his passport, the broadcast says. It attributes that decision to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and mentions ongoing Federal Police inquiries, without setting out their substance or establishing the precise timing of the trip against the order.
Falcão also recounts a meeting between Bolsonaro and São Paulo's governor at a lawyer's office before a video addressing the election result was released. The segment closes by noting the Liberal Party's statements recognizing Lula's victory, while its defeated candidate's whereabouts were being described through allies rather than his own public account.
