Susie Wiles faced Donald Trump's anger in front of others as Republican losses emerged on election night, New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman tells CNN.
"And yes, the President berated her in front of other people on election night in the East Room, blamed her for the losses," Haberman says. Her account adds a behind-the-scenes confrontation to the public announcement that Stephen Miller would replace Wiles as White House chief of staff.
Haberman also describes friction between West Wing factions aligned with Wiles and Miller. She interprets the appointment as a familiar response to political setbacks: "What it tells me is President Trump has one move, and it is always more MAGA or more Trump."
The broadcast then shifts from Haberman's reporting to a panel discussion about what Miller's elevation could mean for an administration facing Democratic congressional oversight.
New York Post correspondent Lydia Moynihan argues that Miller's policy experience and connection with Trump's base could help him navigate the investigations ahead. Former Biden-Harris campaign official Ashley Allison offers a different assessment, arguing that his immigration policies were part of what voters rejected. Veteran journalist Terry Moran sees the appointment as preparation for an aggressive response to oversight.
Trump supplies his own explanation in footage included near the end: "Stephen is a great fighter. He's been with me right from the beginning." That emphasis on loyalty and confrontation is the central question running through CNN's discussion: whether Miller answers the political problems exposed by the election, or reinforces them.
