House explosion south of Calgary
The Canadian Press shows firefighters working around the smoking remains of a home near Okotoks, Alberta, after a fire and explosion forced both residents out of the building.
Deputy Fire Chief Dave Simms of the Foothills Fire Department says both escaped safely and were taken to hospitals as a precaution. Crews had been called early on November 5 to find the house fully engulfed in fire.
The home stood in a rural subdivision on North Coulee Trail, northeast of Okotoks and south of Calgary. White insulation was scattered around the neighborhood, while footage shows debris surrounding the heavily damaged structure.
Neighbor Wendy Jones says a loud bang woke her. She describes repeated explosions as the blaze intensified: "It just kept exploding. It was just mushrooming up into the sky."
The short report drew about 22,500 views in its first eight hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts. It brings together Jones's account and the fire department's initial explanation, with crews still spraying water on the burned remains.
Simms says the cause remains under investigation.
