Family of 20-year-old co-pilot killed in Florida plane crash speaks out

Criticism of his daughter's age has added another burden to Alan Filgueiras's grief. In CBS News's report on the South Florida private jet crash, correspondent Kris Van Cleave says the 20-year-old co-pilot was fully certified.

The crash killed nine people, according to CBS. Speaking on The Daily Report, Van Cleave describes the father's defense of his daughter before the broadcast plays Alan's account of repeatedly listening to her emergency radio calls.

"She was the one over there, to the last minute fighting," Alan says. Listening back, he says, meant "trying to find a clue in my head."

His recollection turns from admiration to the wish that he could have helped: "I wanted to be by her side inside the plane to help her."

Alongside the family's account, CBS provides an investigation update. Van Cleave reports that wreckage parts have been recovered, but that the cockpit voice recorder had not been reported found at the time of the broadcast. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the cause, CBS says; the report does not establish what brought the aircraft down.
