Incapacitated in a house bathroom, Call Me Kevin tries talking his way out. An enemy player is within earshot, and Kevin would rather negotiate a revival than accept the obvious outcome.
"I'd prefer if we could be friends, but I mean, I would leave, I guess," he offers.
That's the practical education behind "The Idiot's Guide to WARDOGS", which has drawn about 95,000 views in its first fifteen hours. Playing the tactical first-person shooter Wardogs: Tactical All Out Warfare, Kevin skips the tutorial and discovers how much of his survival will depend on other people's patience.
There's a return to his beginnings here: Kevin recalls starting as a shooter YouTuber in 2011. But military efficiency isn't quite the objective. Inventory menus make him anxious, a downed player supplies an absurd haul of explosives, and teammates handing him an anti-armour launcher have to remind him to check the backblast.
The voice chat makes these encounters more than a succession of missed opportunities. Kevin attaches himself to a player using the name Iggy Pop and tries to keep his reluctant companion alive. Later, he drags JollyGhost into shelter and accompanies the revival animation with pretend spellcasting. A rooftop sniper is considerably less accommodating when Kevin obstructs the view.
Viewers are picking out the unlikely diplomacy, particularly his ability to persuade opponents to revive him. Others recognise a return to his shooting-game roots. The supposed guide's most transferable skill turns out to be finding someone willing to help Kevin through his next mistake.
