Then comes the cut from expectation to reality: a wonky, messily assembled house held up by a couple whose expressions have changed completely. Comic crying audio does the talking. The Short drew roughly four million views in eight hours, a much faster start than their usual Shorts. Its title also celebrates reaching 32 million subscribers, giving a festive baking mishap a second job as a milestone announcement.

Christmas isn't their only occasion on the go. A countdown to Cadel's birthday and two Halloween Shorts are also drawing unusually quick starts, leaving several celebrations sharing space on the channel.

Under the gingerbread sketch, viewers are comparing their own construction failures. Some reckon the couple have done better than they could; another finds a modest defence for the finished house: it is, at least, still upright.
