Alex Smith had Reggie Bush in his backfield, but one offer

The former quarterback's recruiting story surprises Will Compton and sends a Bussin' With The Boys Short far beyond its usual start.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 428,144 views a day, 76 times a normal first day on this channel (5,630).

"Are you serious? I didn't even know that," Will Compton says when Alex Smith names his high school running back: Reggie Bush.

The surprise is not just that two future NFL players shared a team. Smith remembers college head coaches constantly visiting campus to see Bush, while he tried to get their attention himself. All that access left the quarterback with a single scholarship offer.

"Utah was the only school that offered me," Smith says.

The Bussin' With The Boys Short has drawn more than 250,000 views in its first ten hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for Shorts. Its comment section is also much busier than a typical first day. Viewers are trading memories of watching Bush at USC and in high school, while others share Compton's surprise at the connection.

Smith's story keeps going past the recruiting slight. He recalls losing his redshirt status for a handful of freshman-year plays, including an interception returned for a touchdown. At that point, the route to an NFL career hardly looked obvious.

Then came Urban Meyer and a Utah coaching staff that included Kyle Whittingham and Dan Mullen. Smith describes how the spread-option offense changed his college trajectory, taking him from that lonely offer to the first overall draft pick. The interview excerpt carries a beer-sponsor card.

Another Smith Short, about being benched for Colin Kaepernick, is also drawing an unusually large audience for the channel. But this clip reaches further back, to when the future top pick was trying to get noticed beside his own running back.
