Alex Smith Opens Up About His Devastating Leg Injury And Incredible NFL Comeback | Bussin'
A football changed the question. During Alex Smith's rehabilitation, physical therapist Johnny Owens tossed him a ball. Catching it gave Smith something to think about beyond what his injury had taken away.
"I can still play catch. Like what else can I still go do?" Smith recalls in his conversation with Taylor Lewan on Bussin' With The Boys.
The sponsored interview clip had drawn nearly 100,000 views before its first day was over, an unusually fast start for the show's Shorts. Another Smith clip, about handling the Chiefs' decision to draft Patrick Mahomes, was also drawing views faster than usual.
Lewan begins by asking whether Smith misses football. The answer goes back to his severe leg break, the infection that followed and the 20 surgeries Smith says he underwent to save his leg. He remembers feeling bitter toward the sport and fearing he would no longer be able to walk normally or wrestle with his children.
Smith explains that a Secretary of Defense designation gave him access to military rehabilitation for what he describes as a "warlike injury." At the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, he worked alongside wounded veterans.
It was there that Owens put a football back in his hands. Smith locates his desire to return to the sport in that small act, rather than in a grand declaration about an NFL comeback.
"That's the first day I said I wanted to play again, was that day."
